Sandstone: While not as hard as granite, sandstone can be worked
into far more graceful sculptural lines. The exquisite details
and gentle expressions achieved by our artisans are unique to
only a few villages. Traditionally sandstone is carved during
the short season in which paddy, wet rice, is ripening. This
is the only time of year when villagers can rest from the demands
of farming. The stone will patina with age and resists cold
and dampness. A liberal coating of yoghurt will encourage the
growth of mosses to quickly achieve a truly ancient appearance.
