Furniture: Our
traditional furniture is hard carved from single pieces of wood,
often three to five inches thick. No machinery is used. Tools
used are handsaws, mallets and chisels. The timber may be recycled
boards from teak fishing boats or from logs cut during the colonial
era. Many of the objects in our collection are every-day items
made in traditional forms unchanged for hundreds of years. For
example some of the wooden bowls, benches and doors from our
collection are still in village use today.
We also offer custom made carved timber elements for architectural
and decorative use. All wood weathers, however many of our pieces
are suitable for garden and patio, just as they are used outdoors
in the villages where they are made. Our hand carved objects
are not mass-produced. The finishes are primitive and some irregularities
occur. These are part of the man-made charm of these one-of-a-kind
treasures.
